DESCRIPTION OF THE CARDS

Let me tell you about these wonderful cards.

These plant cards are designed to be used in the field to learn to identify edible and poisonous wild plants. They're fun and useful at the same time. The really neat thing about these cards is their compactness. Their dimensions are the same as a pack of playing cards. If you take all 52 of the cards with you to the outdoors or the wilderness, they're light and handy. They fit easily into a shirt pocket. Now, if you want to cut down on weight even further, you can take part of the set to suit your needs.

The real name of one set of cards is "Edible and Poisonous Plants of the Western States." These cards cover common wild plants from the Rockies to the West Coast. The other set, "Edible and Poisonous Plants of the Eastern States" covers common wild plants from the Rockies to the East Coast. These two sets of 52 cards each also cover common wild plants in southern Canada. For short, we just say "plant cards".

Each card has a beautiful photo of a wild plant on the front. On the back is a detailed description, plus habitat and use information.

Here is what is on the back of one of the cards, the card covering Wappato plants:

"Description: Aquatic plants with distinctive, erect, arrowhead-shaped leaf blades. Flowers are waxy white, 3-petaled, and grow in whorls of three near the tops of the flower stalks. In the fall the plants produce hard, smooth, potato-like tubers at the ends of long subterranean runners. These tubers may be several feet from the plant.

"Habitat: Blooms in July and August along the borders of streams and ponds. Widely distributed.

"Uses: Wappato was a major source of vegetable food for many tribes of Indians. The tubers form in the fall and can be prepared by any method that would be used for potatoes. Cooking dissipates the rather unpleasant taste of the raw tubers."

Poisonous plants

Now a word about the cards covering the poisonous plants. In each set there are eight or nine cards featuring poisonous plants. They are well marked so you won't mix up the poisonous plants with the edible ones. All the writing on the back of the cards featuring poisonous plants is in red ink in contrast to the black ink on the back of the cards featuring edible plants.
